Gilley’s was founded in 1971 when country music star Mickey Gilley teamed up with local businessman Sherwood Cryer to turn a small club on Spencer Highway into a legendary Texas hotspot. Named after Gilley, who frequently performed there, the venue quickly grew into a major center for country music and nightlife in the Houston–Pasadena area.
Known as the “world’s largest honky-tonk,” Gilley’s featured an enormous dance floor, multiple bars, a rodeo arena, a recording studio, pool tables, mechanical bull riding, and nonstop live entertainment. Open seven nights a week, it became a popular gathering place for oil workers, locals, and country music fans from across the region.
