From roughly the 1950s through to the early 1990s, many Major League Baseball caps were finished with the “Kelly Green” green under-visor.

The logic was practical, green absorbed glare, softened the brightness of the sun, and was thought to be easier on the eyes than a stark white or grey surface.

By the late 1980s and into the 1990s, manufacturers began shifting to grey under-visors. Television played a huge role in that move, as broadcasts grew sharper and colour correction improved, grey presented a more neutral, modern look.
Teams sought consistency, and grey felt less old-fashioned. Yet the Kelly green visor never fully disappeared. It slipped into the realm of nostalgia. Vintage purists began to seek it out. Cap collectors started to recognise the green underside as a marker of authenticity.
